Public Realm Upgrades - Proposals aim to reinstate the street’s original proportions, including a defined pavement, kerbstone and carriageway, reinterpreted within a high-quality flush surface. These proposals include even, slip-resistant paving, clearer pedestrian movement zones, and coordinated street furniture to reduce clutter and maintain unobstructed routes. The approach supports easier navigation, particularly for visually impaired and mobility-aid users, while creating flexible space for dining, browsing and socialising.
Greening - A coordinated greening strategy will enhance biodiversity and climate comfort. Existing trees will be retained, alongside carefully integrated additional planting and vertical greening to provide shade and seasonal variation. Greening measures will be designed to avoid impeding pedestrian or vehicular movement, ensuring clear and accessible routes are maintained. Planting and subtle lighting will complement movement through the street, supporting wayfinding while reinforcing Carnaby’s distinctive character.
Lighting - A balanced street lighting approach will enhance safety, comfort and atmosphere after dark. Heritage-style lanterns, façade lighting and discreet architectural highlights will improve visibility and emphasise key features without adding glare or clutter. Lighting will be carefully coordinated to support intuitive wayfinding and a welcoming evening environment.
Wayfinding & Signage - Designs will strengthen connections to Soho, Regent Street and Oxford Street through clearer signage and subtle visual cues such as paving changes and lighting. Gateways and key corners are being considered as welcoming markers to help visitors navigate intuitively while reinforcing local character.
Public Art & Cultural Programming - Creative interventions will celebrate Carnaby Street’s heritage and cultural identity. Subtle public art, historic interpretation, paving details and façade highlights are intended to enrich the pedestrian experience without overwhelming the street — balancing everyday use with a strong sense of place.
Together, these concept designs enhance Carnaby Street’s everyday experience, build on what people value most, and support its continued evolution as a distinctive and inclusive part of the West End.
